Divide the markup by 100 plus the markup, then multiply by 100: Margin = Markup ÷ (100 + Markup) × 100. A 50% markup is therefore 50 ÷ 150 × 100 = 33.33% margin. The equivalence table earlier in this article covers the values merchants meet most often.
Why can’t profit margin ever reach 100%?
Because margin is profit divided by selling price, and profit can only equal the full price if the product cost you nothing at all. As margin approaches 100%, the price formula Cost ÷ (1 − Margin ÷ 100) divides by a number approaching zero, so the required price grows without limit. Any percentage above 100 you hear in the wild is a markup wearing the wrong name.
How do marketplace fees change my selling price?
Fees are charged on the selling price, so they must be added inside the formula: Price = Cost ÷ (1 − (Margin + Fee) ÷ 100). At a $100 cost, a 30% margin alone needs $142.86, but a 30% margin alongside a 10% fee needs $166.67. Pricing at the first number while paying the second fee silently cuts your real margin to 20%.
What is the difference between gross margin and net margin?
Gross margin counts only the direct product cost against the price. Net margin also removes fees, overhead and taxes, and is the number that reaches your pocket. This calculator sits deliberately close to net at the product level: it deducts platform fees and per-unit extra costs, so its answer is the honest per-unit economics of the listing.
