Every photographer, blogger, shop owner and designer eventually hits the same moment. You publish an image you made, and weeks later you find it somewhere else. No credit, no link, sometimes a price tag on it. The picture travelled and your name did not.
A watermark is the oldest and still the most practical answer to that problem. It rides inside the picture itself, so it survives the copy, the screenshot, the repost and the re-upload that strip away every other trace of who made the thing. That is why a technique invented by Italian papermakers in the thirteenth century is still doing useful work on the internet in 2026.
This guide covers both halves of the subject. The first half is practical: exactly how to use the Watermark Studio above, what each control does, and which settings actually produce a professional result instead of a ruined photograph. The second half is the part most tutorials skip: where watermarks came from, what they can and cannot prove, how they interact with copyright law, how they behave when a social platform recompresses your file, and how they fit alongside the newer provenance systems now being built into cameras and AI tools. By the end you should be able to watermark an image well, and know when not to.
What a Watermark Actually Is
A watermark is any mark added to a work that identifies its origin and is difficult to remove without damaging the work. That definition is deliberately broad, because the family is broad. It helps to separate three quite different things that all get called watermarking.
Visible watermarks
These are the ones you can see: a logo in a corner, a signature across a print, a semi-transparent name tiled diagonally over a preview image. Their job is communication. A visible watermark tells a human being, at a glance and with no software, who made this and whether they are allowed to use it. It also makes casual theft inconvenient, which is most of the theft that actually happens. Nobody edits out a watermark to steal a photo for a group chat. They just move on and find an unmarked one.
Everything the Watermark Studio produces is a visible watermark, permanently composited into the pixels of the exported file.
Invisible and forensic watermarks
These embed a signal in the image data itself, below the threshold of human perception, usually by making tiny coordinated adjustments in the frequency domain rather than to individual pixels. The image looks unchanged. A detector that knows what to look for can recover the hidden payload, which might be a licence ID or the identity of the specific customer a file was delivered to.
This technique descends from steganography, the practice of hiding a message inside an innocent-looking carrier. The word comes from Greek roots meaning covered writing, and the earliest well-known treatise on the subject is Johannes Trithemius's Steganographia, written around 1499. The modern digital field took shape in the early 1990s, and a 1993 paper by Andrew Tirkel, Charles Osborne and colleagues is often cited among the first published uses of the term electronic water mark.
Invisible watermarks are excellent for tracing leaks and useless for deterring them, because nobody can see a warning that is invisible. Studios that send out screening copies use them for exactly this reason: the recipient cannot see the mark, so they behave normally, and if the file leaks the studio learns which copy it was.
Metadata and content credentials
The third category lives beside the image rather than inside it. EXIF and IPTC fields can carry a creator name, a copyright notice and contact details. Content Credentials, built on the open C2PA standard, go considerably further and attach a cryptographically signed record of who captured or created a file, what tools touched it and whether generative AI was involved.
This is genuinely valuable and genuinely fragile. Metadata is a separate part of the file, so it can be removed with one command, and much of the time it is removed without anyone intending to. Screenshot an image and the metadata is gone. Upload it to many platforms and the recompression pipeline discards it. Copy it into a document and it does not follow. That fragility is precisely why visible marks have not been made obsolete by better metadata, and probably will not be.
Inside the Watermark Studio: How It Works
The tool at the top of this page runs entirely in your browser. There is no upload step, no account, no queue and no server. Your image is decoded locally, drawn onto an HTML canvas, composited with your mark, and re-encoded when you press download. That has three consequences worth stating plainly: your photographs never leave your device, the tool works offline once the page has loaded, and there is no file size limit beyond what your own device can hold in memory.
Step one: load the image
Drag a file onto the frame or click it to open a picker. PNG, JPG and WebP all work, along with anything else your browser can decode. Once the image is in, the drop frame is replaced by a live preview and the full control panel appears beside it. A small readout under the preview shows the true pixel dimensions of the file you loaded, which matters more than it sounds: the preview is scaled to fit your screen, but every calculation and the final export happen at full original resolution.
Logo mode: your mark on the picture
Logo mode composites a second image over the first. Upload a PNG with a transparent background and you get a clean floating mark. Upload a solid rectangle and you get a solid rectangle, so the transparency is on you.
The size slider is the part people usually get wrong elsewhere. Most tools scale the logo as a percentage of the logo's own natural size, which means a 2000-pixel-wide logo and a 200-pixel-wide logo at the same setting give wildly different results, and the same setting on a phone photo and a print-resolution file gives wildly different results again. We size the logo as a percentage of the base image width instead. Set it to 20 percent and the mark occupies a fifth of the frame's width whether the photo is 800 pixels across or 8000. Your settings become portable, which is the whole point if you are marking a batch by hand.
Text mode: type it, style it, place it
Text mode is for people without a logo file, and honestly for a lot of people who have one. A clean typographic mark, a name and a domain, often reads better than a shrunken logo.
You get three type choices, all drawn from the fonts already installed on the reader's system, so nothing is downloaded and nothing breaks. Sans is the neutral default. Serif carries a more editorial or fine-art tone. Mono suits technical and code-adjacent brands. There is a bold toggle, a colour picker, and a size slider that again works as a percentage of image width rather than a fixed point size.
The control that earns its place is the outline toggle. It draws a dark stroke behind the glyphs before filling them. White text alone disappears over a bright sky and dark text disappears over a shadow, so a single fixed colour can never be safe across a varied set of photographs. An outlined mark stays legible over both, and it is the reason broadcast subtitles have used the same trick for decades. Leave it on unless you have a specific reason not to.
Position, margin and the nine-point grid
Placement is a three-by-three grid of buttons rather than a dropdown, because a grid shows you the answer instead of describing it. Corners, edge centres and dead centre are all one click away. The margin slider then pushes the mark away from the edge, and the geometry accounts for rotation, so a tilted mark is inset by its true rotated bounding box and never clips off the edge of the frame.
Opacity: the single most important slider
If you change one setting from its default, make it this one. Opacity is the negotiation between two things you both want: a mark visible enough to do its job, and a photograph still worth looking at.
Full opacity is almost always wrong. It reads as a sticker slapped on top rather than part of the image, and it destroys whatever is underneath it. Very low opacity is the opposite failure, invisible on a busy background and trivially cloned out. The useful band for a corner mark is roughly 45 to 70 percent. For a tiled pattern across the whole frame, drop considerably lower, around 12 to 25 percent, because a hundred repetitions of a faint mark are far more visible in aggregate than one instance of it.
Rotation
Rotation runs from minus 180 to plus 180 degrees. For a corner mark, leave it at zero; a tilted logo in a corner looks like an accident. Rotation exists mainly to serve pattern mode, where a diagonal repeat at around 30 to 45 degrees is both harder to remove and, for reasons of visual habit, immediately legible as a proof or preview image.
Pattern mode: tiling the whole frame
Switch on the repeat option and the mark is stamped across the entire image on a computed grid, with a spacing slider to control density. This is the serious protection mode, and it changes the economics of theft completely. A corner mark can be cropped off in five seconds. A tiled mark across the full frame cannot be removed without reconstructing the image underneath every single instance, which for a normal person on a normal deadline means the file is unusable.
Tiling is how stock agencies have always distributed preview and comp images, and it is the right choice for client proofs, portfolio previews, unpaid invoices and anything you are showing before money has changed hands. The tile grid is computed from the rotated bounding box of your mark plus your chosen spacing, with an internal cap on total tile count so a huge image with tight spacing cannot lock up your browser.
Export: PNG, JPG or WebP
Three formats, and the choice matters more than most people assume. PNG is lossless and preserves transparency, so it is correct for graphics, screenshots, logos and anything with flat colour or text. JPG is lossy and much smaller, and correct for photographs. WebP splits the difference with better compression than JPG at similar quality, and appears in the menu only when your browser can actually encode it, so the option never lies to you.
For JPG and WebP a quality slider appears. Ninety-two percent is a sensible default. Below about eighty you start seeing compression artefacts cluster around the hard edges of a text watermark, which is an unusually good place to notice them.
Copy straight to the clipboard
Next to the download button is a copy button that puts the finished image on your system clipboard as a PNG, ready to paste directly into a document, an email, a chat or a design tool. When a browser does not support image clipboard writes the tool tells you so rather than failing silently.
Six languages, fullscreen, and good behaviour
The interface is available in English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese and Hindi, chosen automatically from an embed setting, a URL parameter or your browser's own language, and switchable at any time from the header. Arabic flips the layout to right-to-left within the tool only. The fullscreen button hands the whole viewport to the editor, which is genuinely useful when you are judging opacity on a large photograph.
The tool is also built to be a good guest on any page. It creates its own isolated styling context, so the host site's theme cannot distort it and it cannot leak a single style rule back out into the article around it. Multiple copies can run on one page independently. It stores nothing, requests nothing from the network, and touches no part of the document outside its own container.
A Short History of the Watermark
Watermarking is far older than photography, let alone the internet, and the history explains a surprising amount about why the modern practice looks the way it does.
Fabriano, around 1282
Paper itself came from China, traditionally credited to Cai Lun around 105 CE, and reached Europe through the Islamic world over the following centuries. The watermark, though, appears to be a European invention, and the earliest known examples come from the paper mills of Fabriano in the Italian Marche, commonly dated to about 1282.
Those first marks were simple: a cross, a circle, a crown, a bull's head. Their purpose was commercial identification. Paper was expensive and its quality varied enormously, so a mill that made good paper had every reason to sign it, and a buyer had every reason to want a signature they could check. The watermark was, in a real sense, one of the first trademarks in the modern sense of the term: an unforgeable-at-scale mark of origin baked into the goods.
How the mark is actually made
Handmade paper is formed by dipping a wire mesh mould into a vat of pulp and lifting it out, letting water drain through and leaving a mat of fibres behind. If you sew a shaped wire onto that mesh, the pulp settles thinner over the raised wire. When the sheet dries, that thinner region transmits more light. Hold the page up and the design appears.
The name is a small historical joke. Water is not what makes the mark, and the German Wasserzeichen and its English translation probably describe how the finished mark looks, faint and liquid, rather than how it is produced. When papermaking industrialised, the same effect was achieved with a dandy roll, a wire-covered cylinder that presses the design into the wet web on a moving machine, an invention generally credited to John Marshall in 1826.
From mill mark to money
A mark that is created during manufacture and cannot be added afterwards is a security feature waiting to be noticed, and it was noticed. Watermarks became central to banknote and document security, and they remain so. Hold a banknote to the light today and the portrait watermark you see is the same physics the Fabriano mills used, refined over seven centuries into multi-tonal images with deliberately varied thickness.
This is the moment the watermark's meaning doubled. It had been a mark of origin. Now it was also a mark of authenticity, a claim that this object is genuine, and the two meanings have travelled together ever since.
Photographers start signing their prints
Photography arrived in the nineteenth century with an unfamiliar property: the negative made copies cheap. Studios responded with marks. Cabinet cards and cartes de visite carried printed studio imprints on the mount. Fine art printers used embossed blindstamps pressed into the paper margin. Many photographers signed negatives so the signature appeared in every print, which is a visible watermark in the exact modern sense, sixty years before anyone had a reason to call it that.
The digital turn
Then copies became free, instant and lossless, and the problem changed in kind. Stock photography agencies were among the first to feel it and among the first to respond, distributing low-resolution comps with heavy tiled marks so a client could evaluate an image without being able to use it. That pattern, faint diagonal repeat across the full frame, is now so familiar that it reads as a signal on its own: this is a preview, not a licence.
The 1990s brought both halves of the digital field into being. Visible marking became a routine step in every photographer's export workflow. Invisible marking became an active research area, and image search engines eventually gave the whole thing teeth. Reverse image search, in tools like TinEye from 2008 and later Google Images, made it possible to find your work in the wild for the first time.
The provenance era
Which brings us to now, and to a genuinely new development. Generative AI made synthetic images cheap and convincing, and the response has been an industry-wide push toward cryptographic provenance rather than perceptual marks.
The state of that push in 2026 is worth being precise about, because there is a lot of overclaiming. The C2PA standard is real and shipping. Its conformance programme launched in mid-2025 and the interim trust list that held the early ecosystem together was frozen at the start of 2026. Leica was the first major camera maker to sign images at capture, and Sony, Nikon and Canon have followed to varying degrees. Cloudflare became the first major CDN to preserve Content Credentials through image transformations. Since May 2026 OpenAI attaches C2PA credentials to every image generated through ChatGPT and its image API, alongside Google DeepMind's SynthID invisible watermark. TikTok has labelled well over a billion AI-generated or AI-edited videos using the standard.
And yet, by the Reuters Institute's count, fewer than one percent of news images and videos published worldwide currently carry C2PA metadata, among the publishers most motivated to use it. The infrastructure exists. Routine use of it does not, at least not yet. Credentials also still break in the places they are most needed: screenshots, recompression, and platforms that strip metadata on upload. Independent researchers have demonstrated low-cost attacks that scrub or spoof machine-readable watermarking schemes previously considered robust.
None of that makes provenance a bad idea. It makes a visible mark and a cryptographic credential complementary rather than competing, which is the practical conclusion for anyone publishing images today.
Why Watermark at All? The Jobs a Mark Does
A watermark is doing more work than most people credit it with. Being clear about which job you want changes every setting you choose.
- Attribution. The mark travels with the image. When your photograph is reposted with no caption and no link, the mark is the only remaining connection between the work and you. This is the job that pays off most often and gets discussed least.
- Deterrence. Most unauthorised use is opportunistic rather than determined. A visible mark raises the cost just enough that the opportunist goes elsewhere, which is exactly the outcome you wanted.
- Marketing. A mark on a widely shared image is a small billboard that follows the image everywhere. A domain name is often more valuable here than a logo, because a domain is an instruction and a logo is a puzzle.
- Provenance. In a feed full of synthetic images, a consistent mark from a source people already trust becomes a meaningful signal, imperfect but real.
- Commercial gating. Tiled marks let you show work before payment clears. Proofs, comps, portfolio previews, unpaid invoices. The client can evaluate; they cannot use.
- Evidence of care. In a dispute, a consistently marked body of work makes your position noticeably easier to argue, and makes an infringer's claim of innocent use noticeably harder.
- Version control. A plain text mark reading DRAFT, PROOF or CONFIDENTIAL prevents an internal file being mistaken for a final one, which is a mundane use with a very high hit rate in real organisations.
The Anatomy of a Watermark That Works
The gap between an amateur watermark and a professional one is not the design. It is five decisions about where the mark sits and how loud it is.
Placement
Corners are conventional because they usually contain the least important part of the composition, and conventions are useful: readers know where to look. The bottom right is the most common choice in the Western world and the least likely to collide with a subject. The catch is that corners crop, and cropping takes about five seconds. If crop resistance matters, move inward or tile.
Before settling on a corner, check what is actually in it. A mark over a bright sky needs different treatment to one over dark foliage, and a mark over a face is simply a mistake.
Size
Aim for a mark that a viewer reads without effort and forgets immediately. In practice that is roughly 10 to 20 percent of image width for a corner logo and 8 to 15 percent for a corner text mark. Below that it becomes decoration nobody can read. Above about 30 percent you are no longer publishing a photograph with a mark on it.
Because the studio sizes relative to image width, a setting you like will hold across your whole library regardless of resolution.
Opacity and contrast
Opacity should be tuned per background, not set once and forgotten. The mark needs enough contrast against what is behind it to be read, and no more than that. This is where the outline option does the heavy lifting for text: it manufactures local contrast, which lets you run a lower opacity and still stay legible.
Tiling
Tiling trades aesthetics for security, and the trade is worth making whenever the image is a preview rather than a product. Keep tiled opacity low, keep spacing generous enough that the underlying image is still assessable, and rotate the pattern. The goal is an image a client can judge and cannot use.
Rotation
Zero degrees for corner marks. Thirty to forty-five for patterns. There is very little useful ground in between.

Mistakes That Ruin a Watermark
- Full opacity. The most common error and the most damaging. It announces amateur work more reliably than anything else on this list.
- Marking over the subject. A logo across a face or the focal point of a composition does not protect the image, it replaces it.
- Marking your only copy. Watermarking is destructive. Keep the clean original archived and export marked copies. There is no undo six months later.
- A mark nobody can act on. An abstract glyph with no name and no domain tells a viewer that someone owns this and gives them no way to find out who. A domain is the highest-value thing you can put in a mark.
- Inconsistency. A different position, size and opacity on every image means the mark never becomes recognisable. Pick a recipe and keep to it.
- Marking before editing. Crop, colour-correct and retouch first, then watermark last, or your mark will be stretched, cropped or colour-shifted by the steps that follow.
- Trusting the mark too far. A watermark is friction, not a lock. Anyone determined enough will remove it. Design for the opportunist, who is the realistic threat.
- Ignoring the platform. A mark that reads perfectly at full size can vanish in a thumbnail. Check your mark at the size people will actually see it.
Watermarks and the Law
This section is general information rather than legal advice, and the details vary by country, so treat it as orientation and consult a qualified lawyer for anything consequential.
Copyright exists without the mark
The most important legal point is also the most misunderstood. In every country party to the Berne Convention, which is nearly all of them, copyright arises automatically when an original work is fixed in a tangible form. You do not need to register it, publish it, or mark it. Your unwatermarked photograph is exactly as protected as your watermarked one.
So a watermark is not the source of your rights. It is evidence and notice: it makes ownership visible, it makes an accidental-infringement defence less plausible, and in some jurisdictions marking and registration can affect the remedies available. The rights were already yours.
Copyright management information
There is a second and less well-known layer. Many jurisdictions specifically prohibit removing or altering copyright management information, meaning the identifying details attached to a work. In the United States that is section 1202 of the copyright statute, added by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in 1998. Comparable provisions exist across the European Union and elsewhere.
The practical effect is that someone who crops out your watermark or strips your metadata in order to pass the work off may be committing a separate wrong on top of the infringement itself. That is a meaningful addition to your position in a dispute, and one reason to attach both a visible mark and complete metadata.
Moral rights and attribution
Many legal systems, particularly in continental Europe, recognise moral rights that are distinct from economic rights and often cannot be sold away. Chief among them is the right of attribution: the right to be identified as the author. A watermark is a direct, durable assertion of that right, carried inside the work.
What a watermark does not prove
Be clear-eyed here. A watermark is a claim, not a proof. Anyone can put any mark on any image, which is why marks alone cannot establish authenticity, and why cryptographic provenance is being built. What establishes your authorship is the evidence trail: original camera files with their metadata, layered project files, dated archives and delivery records. The watermark points at that trail. It is not a substitute for keeping one.

The pattern in that table is the real lesson. No single row is sufficient. A visible mark for humans, complete metadata for machines, an archived original for evidence, and periodic reverse image searches for enforcement together form something like adequate coverage. Any one of them alone leaves an obvious gap.

The Technical Side: How Pixels Get Blended
Alpha compositing in one formula
When the tool draws your mark at 60 percent opacity, it is performing alpha compositing, formalised by Thomas Porter and Tom Duff in a 1984 paper that remains the basis of essentially all digital image blending. For each channel of each pixel, the standard source-over operation is:
result = (alpha * source) + ((1 - alpha) * backdrop)
At an alpha of 0.6, a white mark over a mid-grey background at value 128 yields 0.6 times 255 plus 0.4 times 128, which is 204. Bright enough to read, dark enough to let the photograph through. Run the same maths over a white sky at 250 and you get 253, which is why a white mark vanishes on bright backgrounds and why the outline option exists.
When your logo has its own transparency, the two alpha values multiply, so a PNG whose pixels are already at 50 percent, drawn at 60 percent opacity, composites at an effective 30 percent. Worth knowing if a mark looks fainter than the slider suggests.
Why relative sizing beats fixed pixels
A 200-pixel logo is a bold statement on an 800-pixel image and nearly invisible on a 6000-pixel one. Because every dimension here is derived from the base image width, the visual result is resolution-independent. This is the same reasoning behind relative units in CSS and it solves the same problem: describe the intent, not the pixel count.

One caution specific to watermarking: every lossy re-encode compounds. If you open a JPG, add a mark and save as JPG, you have compressed twice. For a single pass at high quality this is invisible. Repeat it five times and it is not. Always start from the highest-quality original you have.
Resolution, DPI and a myth worth dropping
A digital image has pixel dimensions. It does not have a DPI in any meaningful sense until it is printed, at which point DPI is simply pixels divided by physical size. The 72 DPI figure that circulates as a web standard is a historical artefact of early display hardware and has no bearing on how your image appears in a browser. For watermarking purposes, the only number that matters is the pixel width, which is exactly what the tool shows you and sizes against.
Watermarks, Search and Social
Image SEO
A watermark does not directly affect search rankings. What it affects is what happens after a ranking: whether a reader who encounters your image elsewhere can trace it back to you. That is a traffic question rather than a ranking question, and often a more valuable one.
The ranking work is done by everything around the image. Descriptive filenames instead of camera serials. Genuine alt text that describes the image for someone who cannot see it. Captions and surrounding text that give the image context. Sensible dimensions and modern formats so the page loads fast. Structured data where it applies. Reverse image search
Reverse image search is how you find out whether any of this matters for your work. Upload one of your images to a reverse search engine and see where it appears. Do it for a handful of your most popular images every few months. If your work is being used without credit, this is how you learn about it, and a visible mark on the copies you find makes the conversation that follows considerably shorter.
Platform recompression
Every major platform re-encodes what you upload, usually more aggressively than you would. This has two consequences for marks. Thin, low-contrast, small text degrades badly, so favour slightly bolder and slightly larger than looks necessary at full size. The provenance stack

The rules are catching up
This is no longer purely voluntary. Article 50 of the EU AI Act, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, became applicable on 2 August 2026. It requires providers of generative systems to mark synthetic audio, image, video and text output in a machine-readable, detectable format, and requires deployers to disclose deepfakes and AI-generated text published on matters of public interest. A limited grace period runs to 2 December 2026 for the marking obligation on systems already on the market, and content generated before 2 August 2026 does not need retroactive labelling. Penalties reach 15 million euro or three percent of worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher, and the rules reach any provider or deployer whose output lands in front of EU users regardless of where they are based.
The Commission's draft guidance points at C2PA as an example of what compliant marking looks like without mandating it. Meanwhile independent research has shown that machine-readable watermarking can be spoofed or scrubbed cheaply, which is an uncomfortable but important fact about the state of the art.
Where a visible mark still wins
Given all that, it would be reasonable to ask whether a visible watermark is a relic. It is not, for three reasons.
It requires nothing of the viewer. No detector, no verifying platform, no support for any standard. A human being sees it and understands it, which is still how almost all images are consumed.
It survives the destruction of everything else. Screenshots, recompression, metadata stripping, copy-paste into a document. The mark is in the pixels; it goes where they go.
And it works today, everywhere, for everyone, with adoption of exactly one hundred percent. Content Credentials are a better long-term answer to a related but different question, and they are sitting at under one percent usage in the field. Use both. Sign your files where you can, and put your name on the picture regardless.
A Practical Workflow
- Finish your edit first. Crop, correct, retouch. Watermarking is the last step before export.
- Archive the clean original somewhere you will still be able to find it in five years.
- Decide the job. Attribution on a published image, or gating on a preview? That answer selects single mark or tiled pattern, and everything else follows.
- Load the image and build the mark. Logo mode for a brand asset, text mode for a name and domain.
- Set size relative to the frame, then set opacity by looking at the actual photograph rather than at a number.
- Check the mark at the size your audience will see it, including thumbnail size.
